What MCS certification is and why it matters

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is the UK quality and safety standard for small-scale renewable electricity and heat installations, including domestic and commercial rooftop solar PV and battery storage.

To hold MCS certification, an installer must use MCS-certified panels and inverters, calculate annual generation using the standardised MCS irradiance methodology, size cables and switchgear to current BS 7671 wiring regulations, and pass regular technical and quality management audits.

Why SEG tariffs, insurers and lenders ask for your MCS certificate

  • Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): Under Ofgem SEG rules, electricity suppliers such as Octopus Energy, E.ON Next, British Gas and ScottishPower require proof of MCS certification (alongside a smart meter and DNO notification) before paying you for exported solar electricity.
  • Selling or remortgaging your home: Conveyancing solicitors, RICS surveyors and mortgage lenders routinely ask for the MCS certificate, Building Regulations Part P electrical certificate and DNO connection letter to confirm the roof array is compliant.
  • Home and commercial buildings insurance: Insurers expect roof-mounted electrical generation and lithium battery storage to be fitted by an accredited contractor to recognised UK standards.
