EV chargers

Home EV charging planned with your solar and household electrics; so plugging in on the drive is straightforward, safe and future-ready.

Planned with your solar

If you already have panels - or are installing them - we design charging so generation, battery and the car work together sensibly.

Right for your drive

We look at cable runs, consumer unit capacity, CT clamp load management and where the car actually parks, not just a catalogue charger on a brochure.

Honest advice

Deal directly with experienced electricians and solar installers; no commission-driven upsell on hardware you do not need.

Charge at home with Solar City

Drive electric (or have an EV on order) and want to plug in on the drive? Tell us when you request a solar quote. Planning your solar PV array, home battery storage and EV charger together means we can coordinate cable runs, consumer unit protection and CT clamp load management in a single tidy electrical installation.

Solar-aware charging & load management

A standard 7.4 kW single-phase home charger draws up to 32A, which is often the largest single load in a house. When installed by electricians who understand solar and battery storage, your charging setup is configured properly from day one:

  • Surplus solar diversion: On bright days, a CT clamp on your incoming meter tails detects when your roof is exporting at least 1.4 kW (6A) and diverts that clean surplus straight into your car.
  • Protecting your home battery: If a charger is wired on the wrong side of the battery CT clamp, plugging in the car at 6pm will immediately drain your home battery into the vehicle. We wire and configure the distribution path so your household battery stays reserved for the home while the car charges from surplus solar or your off-peak overnight tariff.
  • Dynamic load curtailment: If your main fuse is 60A or 80A and the shower, oven and heat pump are running at once, dynamic load management automatically trims the EV charge current so your main cut-out fuse is never overloaded.

Consumer unit, earthing & cable route checks

Before installation, our surveyor checks your incoming DNO supply, earthing arrangement, surge protection (SPD), RCD/RCBO protection and the neatest internal or external cable route from your meter box to the driveway or garage. Where your existing consumer unit has no spare ways, we install a dedicated garage or EV distribution board.

Indicative EV charger pricing with solar

In the Solar City instant design tool, you can add a home EV charger to your solar design for an indicative £693 each.

Every figure is indicative, from the Solar City design tool at solarcityuk.co.uk/design. Scaffolding is extra (around £400-£500 per side) and an on-site survey confirms your final design and price.

Common questions

How much does a home EV charger add to a solar installation?
In the Solar City instant design tool, adding a home EV charger to a solar installation has an indicative price of £693 per unit. Every figure is indicative, from the Solar City design tool at solarcityuk.co.uk/design; cable routing, consumer unit capacity and earthing are checked during an on-site survey to confirm your final price.
Can my EV charger use surplus solar power from my roof?
Yes. When configured with a CT clamp monitoring your grid connection, a solar-aware EV charger can divert surplus solar generation into your car on sunny days, or top up on cheap overnight EV tariffs when daylight generation is low.
Will my EV charger drain my home solar battery by mistake?
Not when wired and configured properly. Because we are solar and electrical specialists, we wire your EV charger and CT clamps so that EV charging does not inadvertently empty your household battery unless you specifically choose to do so.
What do you check during a home EV charger survey?
We inspect your main cut-out fuse rating, consumer unit spare ways or need for a dedicated mini-board, earthing arrangement (PEN fault protection), driveway parking position, cable route length, and Wi-Fi or Ethernet signal at the charger point.
Do you install EV chargers as a standalone job or alongside solar?
Both. Most customers ask us to install an EV charger alongside a new solar PV and battery system so all cable runs and isolator boards are completed in one visit, and we can also install standalone chargers across Birmingham, Solihull and within 40 miles.
