Maintenance

Ongoing care so your system keeps performing; inspections, performance checks and practical advice from the team that understands solar electrics.

Solar City maintenance inspection on a residential system

Keep generation on track

Solar PV needs little day-to-day upkeep, but periodic electrical checks catch inverter faults, isolator wear and performance dips before they cost you.

Inspections that matter

We check the system is working safely and as expected; DC string tests, inverter status, generation behaviour and visual array condition.

Repair when needed

If something is wrong, the same in-house engineers can move straight from diagnosis into on-site repair or inverter replacement.

Look after your long-term solar investment

Solar PV systems are designed to generate electricity quietly for decades with minimal intervention. It is rare for a fault to occur with a modern solar panel itself, but the inverter, isolators, connectors and roof fixings live through every seasonal temperature swing and storm. A periodic electrical and visual health check - combined with glancing at your inverter warning lights or monitoring portal once a month - protects both your safety and your annual energy savings.

What we check during a solar maintenance visit

  • Electrical & isolator inspection: Checking AC and DC rotary isolators, consumer unit RCBO/MCB connections, surge protection and generation meters for tight terminations and zero signs of overheating or moisture ingress.
  • Inverter health, firmware & monitoring: Reviewing inverter error logs, cooling fans/heatsinks, earth fault alarms and app connectivity so you can see live generation and battery state of charge.
  • DC string testing & generation vs expectation: Measuring open-circuit voltage, current and insulation resistance on each string and comparing your meter readings against expected West Midlands yield for your kWp size.
  • Visual roof & bird-mesh check: Inspecting panel clamps, flashings, cable routing and any perimeter bird-proofing mesh from safe vantage points to spot nesting pigeons or slipped tiles early.

Supporting our own installs and existing arrays

Whether Solar City installed your system last year, you inherited an older Feed-in Tariff array when buying a house in Solihull or Birmingham, or you manage a commercial building with rooftop PV, our in-house electricians can inspect and maintain it. If you already know your system has stopped generating or is displaying an error code, see our solar panel repair service.

  • Typically low maintenance; panels themselves rarely fail
  • Inverter and isolator checks are the most important electrical inspection items
  • Check warning lights or your monitoring app regularly between visits
  • Call-out inspections available across Solihull, Birmingham and the wider Midlands (MCS NIC-1542)

Common questions

How often do solar panels need maintenance in the UK?
Domestic solar PV arrays need very little day-to-day maintenance because rain naturally rinses tilted panels, but we recommend a periodic electrical and visual health check every few years - or whenever you are buying or selling a house with solar - plus checking your inverter status light or monitoring app monthly.
What does a Solar City maintenance inspection include?
Our solar electricians test DC string voltages and insulation resistance, inspect the inverter, AC/DC isolators, generation meter and consumer unit connections for any signs of thermal stress, review logged fault history and generation against expected kWh yield, and visually inspect the roof array and bird-mesh condition.
Do you maintain solar systems installed by other companies?
Yes. We carry out health checks, servicing and pre-purchase solar inspections on systems across Birmingham, Solihull and within 40 miles regardless of who originally fitted them.
Do my solar panels need specialist cleaning?
Most pitched roofs in the West Midlands self-clean effectively in normal rainfall unless they sit near heavy tree sap, industrial dust, railway lines or nesting pigeons. During an inspection we give honest advice on whether cleaning or bird-proofing is worthwhile rather than selling unnecessary washes.
What happens if your maintenance check finds a fault?
Because our maintenance visits are carried out by qualified in-house solar electricians rather than a cleaning crew, we can diagnose the root cause on the spot and provide a clear repair or inverter replacement quote.
